De Zerbi gets his first home game of the season with record signing Sandro Tonali already looking settled in midfield, and the further addition of Mateus Fernandes for £85m gives Spurs even more control through the centre of the pitch. After the away trip to Brentford to open the campaign, De Zerbi will want his own supporters to see the identity he’s building take shape.
Newcastle United
Jaissle’s rebuild has been forced upon him by a summer of exits — Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimarães all moved on, on top of last year’s departure of Alexander Isak — and Bazoumana Touré is the headline arrival so far to help fill those gaps. A tough Matchweek 1 opener at home to Liverpool didn’t make life any easier, and Jaissle has been open about needing more reinforcements before the window shuts.
Cup Pedigree Watch
- Tottenham’s long-awaited breakthrough. Spurs ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy with their UEFA Europa League triumph, and that kind of experience of winning a genuinely high-pressure European final tends to change the ceiling of belief inside a dressing room.
- Newcastle’s cup pedigree resurgence. The Magpies ended their own decades-long wait with Carabao Cup success not long ago, proof that much of the spine still in this squad knows how to handle knockout football even when personnel changes around them.
- Tonali’s own cup CV. The man at the centre of this reunion has lifted major trophies before at both club and international level, and that big-game temperament is exactly why Tottenham paid what they did.

Tottenham look further along right now, with more clarity in personnel and Tonali giving them control in the areas that matter. I’m backing the hosts to build on their Europa League breakthrough with a strong start to the league campaign, with the added personal motivation of Tonali facing his old club.
